Guanine in Cosmetics: The Fish Scale Shimmer Explained
In 1656, a Parisian named Jaquin extracted a pearly suspension from the scales of the bleak, a small silvery minnow, and sold it to rosary makers who used it to counterfeit oriental pearls. In 1861, the French chemist Charles-Louis Barreswil identified the active crystals as guanine, the same purine base that pairs with cytosine in your DNA. The cosmetic industry never let go of the material. Pearl essence, as the extract came to be known, still lends its silvery luster to nail polish, mascara, and eyeshadow, which makes guanine in cosmetics one of the few makeup ingredients that arrives on your face straight from a fish.
Three questions follow from that origin. What about the crystals produces the shimmer? Where does the supply come from, given that nobody fishes for scales? And why do vegan brands treat a fishing byproduct as a dealbreaker when the fish were already caught for food?
What Makes a Fish Scale Makeup Ingredient Shimmer
Guanine crystallizes inside fish pigment cells called iridophores as thin, rhombic platelets stacked a few hundred nanometers apart. Anhydrous guanine has a refractive index of about 1.83, among the highest of any biological material, according to researchers at the Weizmann Institute who mapped the crystals in koi scales. Every boundary between a platelet and the watery cytoplasm around it reflects a small fraction of light. Stack enough platelets and the partial reflections reinforce into a broad, silvery mirror. A 2014 study in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface documents these stacks in fish skin and on the inner surface of scales, and notes that silvery fish use them to erase their silhouette by reflecting the water around them.
Cosmetic chemistry borrows the mechanism directly. Thin, transparent, stacked platelets let light partially reflect and partially transmit from layer to layer, and the eye reads that mixture as pearl. Natural pearl nacre produces the same effect with aragonite platelets. Guanine is simply the biological material a European river minnow happened to have in bulk.
Pearl Essence: The Byproduct Supply Chain
The original trade used scales of the bleak, Alburnus alburnus, gathered under names like essence d’orient and écailles d’ablettes. Japan and the United States built their own pearl essence industries, and American production scaled up in the 1920s once the First World War cut off European supply. The extract was always a byproduct. Processors harvested scales from fish already landed for food, but the yield is brutal: less than 1% of the guanine and hypoxanthine in the scales is recovered, which kept genuine pearl essence expensive. Cosmetics got it first in nail polish, where 4 to 8% of the formula produced the pearly finishes of the 1920s. Two properties limited the material. The crystals sink in the bottle, a sedimentation problem formulators fought with cheaper Japanese grades whose needle-shaped crystals settled more slowly. And guanine cannot be dried without the crystals clumping, so pressed powders could never use it.
If that supply structure sounds familiar, it should. Like marine collagen, guanine monetizes a waste stream of an existing fishery rather than driving any catch of its own. The ethical reading of that fact splits, and the split is exactly where the vegan argument lives.
Is Guanine Vegan? What the Labels Don’t Say
By the strict definition, no. Guanine is animal-derived, and PETA’s animal-ingredients list flags guanine and pearl essence as fish-scale derived, pointing to synthetic pearl, aluminum, and bronze particles as alternatives. Vegan certification requires finished products to exclude animal-derived ingredients, so a mascara that lists guanine fails the test regardless of how the scales were sourced.
The byproduct argument cuts the other way. No fish is caught for its scales; the material trails the food industry. The same reasoning would justify using any part of any food animal, and certifiers have drawn the line consistently: animal-derived means animal-derived, waste stream or otherwise.
The name hides the origin, too. Guanine was first isolated in 1844 from seabird excrement, guano, and named for it, so nothing on an ingredient list says fish. Only the synonym “pearl essence” hints at scales, and it mostly hints at pearls. The closer parallel is squalane. Both ingredients rode byproduct supply chains until the ethics got complicated, and squalane responded by migrating to olives and sugarcane while the molecule itself stayed identical. Guanine has no cheap plant twin because the molecule is the point: a purine base is not something sugarcane makes. Its substitutes are different chemistry altogether.
Guanine vs Mica Shimmer: Two Different Technologies
Mica is the mineral that displaced guanine, and the two produce luster by different physics. Cosmetic mica is a group of silicate minerals ground into platelets, often coated with titanium dioxide, a technique described in 1942 that went mainstream in the 1960s, per cosmetic historian James Bennett’s pearl-essence timeline. The oxide coating, rather than the crystal itself, generates interference colors, which is why mica-based pigments span every hue from champagne to duochrome violet. Guanine needs no coating and gives an uncolored silvery luster that reads slightly softer on skin.
Mica also solved both of guanine’s engineering problems. It dries into pressed powders, and it is abundant and cheap. Formulators moved pearlescent effects into powders, and guanine retreated to wet formulas: nail polish, mascara, liquid highlighters, some lipsticks.
The mineral carries its own ethics problem. Artisanal mica mining in India and Madagascar runs on child labor, and Terre des Hommes estimates about 10,000 children work Madagascar’s mica mines, exposed to lung-damaging dust and unstable shafts. Lab-grown synthetic fluorphlogopite sidesteps the mines and outperforms the natural version, with fewer impurities, greater transparency, and better light reflection. When a label says “synthetic mica,” it is usually this material.
Label readers should also untangle the CI numbers. Guanine is CI 75170, entry 113 of the EU’s permitted colorants annex. Mica is CI 77019. Searching “CI 77019 in makeup” leads to a mineral, and the two ingredients frequently appear together in the same product without either number signaling the other’s presence.
Reading the Label and Choosing a Substitute
The checklist is short. “Guanine” or “pearl essence” on an ingredient list means fish scales. Expect it in nail polish, mascara, and shimmer products described as “pearl” or “nacre.” Substitutes are mature chemistry: synthetic fluorphlogopite replaces the animal crystal with a lab-grown mineral platelet, bismuth oxychloride has delivered pearl luster since the 1930s, and aluminum and bronze particles handle metallic effects in specific formulas. None matches guanine’s optics exactly, which is why genuine pearl essence still commands a premium, but the difference on skin is small enough that a certified-vegan formula no longer costs the shimmer.
The platelets in an old bottle of nail polish were once a fish’s camouflage mirror. The same optics now grow in laboratories, and the animal version survives on cost and habit. The label tells you which one you are holding.
