Does Sunscreen Expire? What the Date Really Means
The smallest sentence on a sunscreen bottle may be its most consequential: “Protect the product in this container from excessive heat and direct sun.” The FDA requires that line on every sunscreen label, and it quietly changes what the expiration date means. Sunscreen is regulated as an over-the-counter drug, the bottle is a sealed chemical system, and the printed date measures how long that system stays within specification. A bottle kept cool and dark and a bottle that spent a summer on a car dashboard are two different chemical systems wearing the same label.
So, does sunscreen expire? Yes, and heat shortens the clock. The failure is usually invisible, which is what makes the arithmetic and the storage habits matter more than any spot-check of the lotion itself.
What the sunscreen expiration date actually certifies
Under FDA stability regulations, every nonprescription drug must carry an expiration date unless the manufacturer’s testing shows the product remains stable for at least three years. A sunscreen with no printed date should be treated as expired three years after purchase. The agency’s guidance is blunt: do not use sunscreen past its date, and discard any bottle whose age you cannot verify.
The date certifies something narrow. It says the product delivered its labeled SPF at manufacture and will stay close to that number through the printed window under the storage conditions the stability testing assumed. Those assumptions are the heat-and-sun warning on the back. The formula inside the bottle drifts either way; the conditions decide the speed. Kept on a cool shelf, the drift takes years. Kept where the label says not to keep it, the same drift compresses into a single season.
The slow chemistry inside the bottle
UV filters are molecules built to absorb photons, which makes them inherently reactive. In a sealed bottle, shielded from light, the fast photochemistry stops and slower reactions take over. Water in the formulation hydrolyzes vulnerable bonds. Octocrylene runs a retro-aldol reaction in reverse, splitting back toward the benzophenone it was synthesized from. And the emulsion itself, an engineered suspension of oil and water phases, physically relaxes toward separation.
The best-measured example is the octocrylene problem. A 2021 study in Chemical Research in Toxicology led by Craig Downs measured benzophenone, listed on California’s Proposition 65 as a carcinogen, in 17 commercial sunscreens. Every product containing octocrylene carried it, averaging 39 milligrams per kilogram straight off the shelf, and after six weeks under the FDA’s accelerated stability protocol, which ages a product with sustained heat, the average reached 75, with one sample at 435. The relevant point here is that the reaction runs in storage, accelerates with temperature, and appears on no label anywhere.
Heat attacks the bottle’s structure as well as its chemistry. A 2012 pilot study in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology held nine commercial sunscreens and sunblocks at temperatures from -20 to 60 degrees Celsius for eight hours and found irreversible changes in their physical properties, most pronounced at the warm end. An emulsion that has been through that can look settled rather than spoiled, while the SPF number on the front assumes a uniform distribution of filters that no longer exists inside.
Does sunscreen go bad faster in a hot car?
The honest data complicates the usual advice. A University of Arizona team stored sunscreens where people actually do, inside vehicle cabins through a desert summer, logging 378 hours above 37.8 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit) over six months. Measuring six chemical filters (avobenzone, oxybenzone, homosalate, octinoxate, octisalate, octocrylene) by liquid chromatography, they found no significant loss in the SPF 30 and SPF 50 products tested.
One season of realistic heat, in other words, did not gut the formula. That finding bounds the risk; it does not erase it. Degradation rates scale with both temperature and time, so the same cabin heat working across a three-year bottle is a different experiment from six months of it. The Downs study is the tell: six warm weeks nearly doubled the benzophenone. Chronic heat compresses the calendar rather than killing a bottle in an afternoon. The tube that rode along in a beach bag for a weekend is probably fine. The one that lives in the glovebox all year has been aging on a different calendar than its label describes.
How to tell when a bottle is done
The senses are the backup instrument, and a crude one. Consumer Reports’ guidance is to discard sunscreen that shows any of the following, regardless of the date:
- Separation that will not remix with a good shake
- A watery or clumpy, grainy texture
- A color shift toward yellow or brown
- A stale, off, or crayon-like smell
Each sign is emulsion breakdown or filter degradation made visible. The catch is that the two most consequential failures produce no signs at all. Benzophenone formation changes nothing you can see or smell at the concentrations measured, and filter loss is silent by definition. The checklist has to start with arithmetic before it reaches the senses: the printed date first, then the three-year purchase rule for undated bottles. Writing the purchase month on the tube with a marker solves the memory problem the bottle cannot solve itself. If the active ingredients panel lists octocrylene, age is itself the warning, because that degradation clock started at manufacture.
Store it like the drug it is
The label’s own instructions are the whole protocol. Outdoors, keep the bottle out of direct sun; the FDA suggests wrapping it in a towel or parking it in the shade during long days outside. At home, a cool dark cabinet beats a sunny windowsill and beats the car door pocket by a wide margin. Buy the size you will finish in a season rather than the economy jug that will outlive its own chemistry, because what SPF numbers measure is fixed at the testing bench, and storage decides how much of it survives to your skin.
An expiration date on sunscreen is a measurement with conditions attached. Three years is the ceiling the FDA accepts, and the conditions, cool, dark, sealed, are the part you control. A bottle that lived on a shelf can be trusted to its date. A bottle that lived in heat has been aging on a different calendar, and its date is a guess that flatters it.
